Well, my latest ‘dress parcels’ arrived and I thought I’d share with you all what I ordered.
First was a dress from Ebay. I’ve always been a bit curious about the generic, cheap clothes that come up when you search for ‘prom dress’ or ‘lace skirt’ on Ebay, so I thought I’d order one as a little experiment and see what they’re like.
I decided on the dress below because of the royal blue colour. It cost me USD $34.98 including shipping from the seller non_simple. I’ve included the picture from the listing so that you can get a clearer sense of what it looks like:
Here’s me in the dress:

It’s not bad, but it’s not brilliant either. The fabric is surprisingly soft, but I think this is a little large on me, and I don’t think the cut does much for me either. Still, it wasn’t expensive, and I think it would have looked much better had I ordered the correct size.
I also bought an Asos Velvet Maxi Dress, in the hope that I might be able to wear it with a blazer during winter. It cost me £17 (down from £38) and shipping was free. Here is a picture of one of the delightful Asos models in the navy version of the dress:
Here I am in the black version that I ordered:
It’s not a bad fit, although this dress is a touch on the big side too. The velvet makes this dress look like a ‘going out’ number, so I’m going to have to think of ways to wear it during the day, if that’s possible.
Then, of course, there’s Diane von Furstenberg:
Damn that woman knows how to design a dress.
This is the latest addition to my Diane Von Furstenberg dress collection: it’s the ‘James’ dress from a few seasons ago. I have bought most of my DVF dresses through an Australian girl I met through Ebay (ahhh the technological age) and I’ve been thrilled with every single one. I did have a vague notion of doing a post on the DVF dresses I own but I’m not sure that it would be terribly useful for anyone. Suffice it to say, DVF has the most amazing fit I’ve ever found. Whenever I put one on I ask myself why I bother buying anything else.

Love the velvet dress and the DVF <3 velvet could be worn with a nice pair of flats for day wear perhaps?
I LOVE the last dress!
and I quite like the ebay one as well
@Jade I’ll definitely try the velvet dress with flats and see how it looks. I need to tone it down somehow! Suggestions welcome
DVF is so lovely!
@Ki Thankyou! I love DVF. I might have to play around with how to style the Ebay one – it might need a belt!
Oh please do a DVF post, I’d love to see your collection! I’ve always wanted to try one of her dresses, but am looking at potentially an Issa one at the moment (I want something nice to wear for the evening part of my brother’s summer wedding). Was a lot easier before Kate Middleton wore one, now they are sold out everywhere! I agree that you tend to pay for quality and fit, something I don’t mind doing. At least DVF is cheaper than Roland Mouret, one way of justifying the price! x
You do dresses so well! I love the DVF, it’s so well cut. One of these days you will convince me to try a dress again.

Love the blue lace and teh DVF dresses – so pretty!
@Jennifer Okay then! I’ll put a post together over the next few weeks
I love Issa too, and yes, it does seem that Issa is sold out everywhere! I love Roland Mouret – I like your logic. I’m actually *saving* money by buying DVF
@Jane Thankyou! They are a beautiful cut indeed. If you ever walk past a DVF stockist, definitely try on one of their dresses. You’ll be amazed at what they can do
@Julia Thankyou!
OMG that black velvet dress fits you like a glove! I actually like it on you so much more than on the model ….
only someone like an awesome figure like you could pull off velvet
@Jen Thankyou! You’re too kind
I would wear ALL of these! I love your style – I think you need to take me shopping with you sometime!

Hi there~
I am in a New Year’s wedding coming up and have been told to find a navy blue lace dress. I can’t seem to find one that I prefer over the one that you are wearing in your picture! Any chance you can send me the designer so that I can try to find one? Thank you for your time!

Hi Jenni! I just got that navy blue lace dress from a seller on Ebay (non simple) but they don’t seem to be registered any more! This seems to be the closest option on Ebay at the moment http://www.ebay.com/itm/Women-Sexy-Lace-Sheer-Slash-Neck-Bandeau-Party-Mini-Dress-Casual-OL-Clubwear-New-/370664662118?pt=US_CSA_WC_Dresses&var=640040090936&hash=item564d55e466 but I’m not sure if that’s what you’re after! Let me know how you go
