The Lipstick Tag, Featuring Gratuitous Pictures and Swatches of my Lipstick Collection

I was tagged by the amazing Suzanne from Don’t They Know Who I Am? and the result is this lipstick post. So, here are some gratuitous pictures of my lipstick collection and a few questions and answers at the end.

I’ll avoid the impulse to comment on each lipstick featured here, but if you have any particular questions, just leave them in the comments below 🙂

When you were a child, did you use your mother’s lipstick?

No way! My mum’s makeup was strictly her own domain, but it was ogled from afar, for sure.

How old were you when you bought your first lipstick?

About 17. I’d just moved to Perth to start my university education and I saw a purple Estee Lauder lipstick on a discount table in Myer. I never did wear it much – it just felt terribly grown up and sophisticated to buy a lipstick!

Pink or red lipstick?

Either is fine on me. I’ll go through phases where I wear one or the other. At the moment I’m wearing red lipsticks quite a bit because they work so well in winter.

The most expensive lipstick you ever bought?

The Guerlain Rouge G in Greta. I do the vast majority of my shopping online, but on one occasion I found myself perusing the Guerlain counter in David Jones. The sales assistant was so helpful that I was guilted into buying it then and there, rather than running off and buying it online. $64 later, I had a Guerlain lipstick.

And the cheapest?

Probably any number of NYX lipsticks I’ve bought from Ebay – about $8 a throw.

What’s the most bizarre thing you’ve done with lipstick?

I’ve used lipstick as blush before, a la, Francois Nars, but nothing terribly controversial springs to mind.

If you had to recommend a lipstick, which brand would you recommend and why?

Chanel Rouge Allure, for sure. Many lipsticks brands I’ve tried are very high quality and beautiful to wear, like Rouge Bunny Rouge, Illamasqua, Dolce & Gabanna, Guerlain, Smashbox, and so on. But for comfort, wear time, colour, and availability I find it hard to go past the Rouge Allures.

I tag anyone who would like to do this post. I love peeking into the lipstick collections of others!

    What a collection!

  2. Dempeaux says:

    @Angela Thankyou! I’ve actually given quite a few lipsticks away, so this collection is more representative of what I actually use 🙂

  3. Jen W says:

    Love your collection! I’m so envious of your Rouge Allures stash

  4. Dempeaux says:

    @Jen Thankyou 🙂

  5. Jessica says:

    ahhh, so many pretty colours! the chanel rouge allure in admirable looks amazing.

  6. Dempeaux says:

    @Jess Admirable is gorgeous! It’s like a more grow-up version of MAC’s Cream Cup. Sadly, it was discontinued by Chanel, but you can still pick it up here ande there online. If you see it, grab it!

  7. Celina says:

    What a lovely collection 🙂 Very good quality~

  8. Dempeaux says:

    @Celia Thankyou! 🙂

  9. Priyanka says:

    great post…U have a lovely collection:)

  10. Suzanne says:

    Oh man, every time I see Illamasqua Box I get a step closer to buying it. Because, you know, I don’t have anywhere near enough full on reds in my lipstick collection :3

  11. Dempeaux says:

    @Priyanka Thankyou!

  12. Dempeaux says:

    @Suzanne There are reds, and then there’s Illamasqua Box. This is one that you definitely need in your collection 🙂

  13. Dee says:

    Oooh, that’s a fancypants collection. I’m picturing you with a 1930s dresser and a giant heavy jar of powder with a big puff sitting on it now.

  14. Dempeaux says:

    @Dee Haha! If only! My grandmother used to have a 1930s dresser similar to this and I desparately want one!

  15. You have such a lovely lipstick collection! I am rather envious that you can wear Angel. I love the colour but it does not love me at all. I’m very tempted to do this tag!
    Jane x

  16. Dempeaux says:

    @ModestyBrown It’s the most ‘nude’ nude I can wear! I’d love for you to do this tag Jane – it’s great fun 🙂

  17. Nina says:

    What a great post and what a covetable collection!
    I especially like the fact that you have a really good mix of colours, as I find that I somehow always end up buying variations of the same shade…

  18. Dempeaux says:

    @Nina Thankyou! 🙂

  19. Claire says:

    In the 4th picture the colors are so bright! Great collection, I’m entirely jealous. 😀

  20. Dempeaux says:

    @Claire Thankyou very much! 🙂

  21. Very pretty collection. I can see which are your favorites and, like Jane, I am envious that you can wear Angel. I’d have thought it would be perfect for me, since my skin tone is very fair and cool, but it just disappeared on me.

  22. jeanie says:

    What a lovely stash of lippies! I love the look of Angel and the RBR. I may take you up on this tag- maybe it will inspire me to try some colors I have left lonely for awhile.

  23. Dempeaux says:

    @Zuzu’s Petals What a shame Angel didn’t work for you! I always assumed it was a bit of a universal ‘nude’, but apparently not! It’s a shame, because the formula of that one is lovely too 🙂

  24. Dempeaux says:

    @Jeanie I would love for you to do this tag Jeanie! It really gets you back in touch with all the lovelies in your collection. Both Angel and RBR are really pretty, and the RBR actually comes out a little pinker on my lips than it does on the swatch on my hand 🙂

  25. *jen says:

    That Rouge d’Armani… WOW. So beautiful. Many of them are, actually, but that one “spoke to me”. 🙂

  26. Stacey says:

    Admirable is SO pretty. Do want.

  27. Dempeaux says:

    @Stacey It’s so gorgeous! I’m really not sure why Chanel discontinued it. Grab it if you see it!

  28. Dempeaux says:

    @*jen It’s lovely! Great when I’m channelling a 1920s vibe. FAB for winter 😀

  29. Kimberley says:

    WOW! Love the collection and I love that you really do have quite a range! Mine aren’t so diverse.. Lots of lippy envy here! 🙂

  30. You have the most lipsticks of anyone that I know! Wow! Lovely to see Barry M in your collection (an underrated brand in my opinion) and my favourites were the Mac nude colours, I love Mac products. $64 on a lipstick? How much is this in pounds please?

  31. Dempeaux says:

    @StyleOnTheCouch Oh I like Barry M lipsticks, and should actually try more of them! MAC are reasonably consistent in terms of quality too. $64 in Aussie dollars amounts to £41. Sad, isn’t it? We pay such an awful lot for cosmetics here, which is why I spend so much time shopping online!

  32. Dempeaux says:

    @Kim Thankyou! I like to sample as much as I can – I’m a lipstick adventurer 😉
