So, what should I wear to this wedding?

I handed in my thesis last Friday, and I’m going to a friend’s wedding this Friday. That’s a pretty tight turn around! I have been through my wardrobe and made a short (okay, long) list of dresses that are potential candidates for this wedding, and I want your opinion. Unsurprisingly, this also turns out to be a Jolie Vintage retrospective, as most of my wardrobe consists of pieces from that store. I’m still completely obsessed! They’ve just started a Facebook page, blog, and Twitter, which feeds my obsession nicely. I can’t recommend them highly enough! If you want designer quality and cut for a fraction of the price, buy vintage from them.

Anyway, back to me, haha! Here are seven dresses that I think would be suitable for the wedding. I want to know what you think! I can’t decide! As it’s my first proper night out post-thesis, I don’t want to look like I’ve been dragged backwards through a hedge. I want to get rid of the student look and enjoy a sophisticated night out.

All the dresses are from the 1960s. I must like that era! Also, some of my expressions look like I want to fight you. I assure you I do not.

1. Black dress with bell skirt.

The only problem is that I’ve managed to destroy the hook on the back of the collar. This is where long hair comes in handy!

2.  Japanese-inspired brocade dress:

I adore the train on the back of this dress!

3.  Deep emerald velvet dress with beading on the bodice:

4.  Fine-knit cream dress with rhinestone-spangled sleeves and a low back.5. Black and white dress with fringing at the hem and pearl rhinestone detailing at the bust. The bodice also features knife-pleat chiffon.

6. Mauve-pink chiffon dress with a short train at the back. This feels AMAZING on.

7. Purple silk dress with rhinestone buttons on both sleeves and a sweetheart neckline.

So what do you think? What do I go for? It’s just about spring here but it’s still a bit chilly, although I think it will be reasonably warm indoors.

Ideas on accessories are most welcome too!

  1. Gosh, they’re all beautiful!
We actually have a couple of silly rules here when it comes to wedding outfits: you don’t wear white (it’s the bride’s privilege) and you don’t wear black (it’s not a funeral). Although lots of people just ignore that nowadays.
Based on that, unless it’s a very relaxed venue, I’d go for the pink chiffon dress, also because it’s not one that you’ll have many oppportunities to wear outside of weddings 🙂 and you look stunning in it.
The teal one is more Summer/Fall in my mind, I don’t know why. I love the 2 black ones too, but they’re black, but then if you don’t mind… 🙂

I have a wedding to attend, too, in a month, so a late Fall wedding, and no idea what to wear, I must start the dress hunting!

@Musing Hmmmm yes, I like the pink chiffon one too! It’s one of those dresses that looks and FEELS so feminine. Gosh, what will you wear??

  3. Nat says:

Yes, wear the mauve/pink – it’s perfect for a wedding. You cannot, under any circumstances, wear the cream as it is too bride-y. But the pink it perfectly sweet for such a romantic occasion. I’d wear it with metallic heels and lightly curled hair, and maybe a cat’s eye eyeliner thing 🙂

  4. Dempeaux says:

@Nat Thankyou!! You need to come and be my stylist!! *searches for metallic heels, curls hair and applies eyeliner* 😀

  5. Neena says:

I vote for the pink one too! Maybe with a thin contrasting colour pastel headband?

  6. Michou says:

I’d choose between 2, 3, 6, and 7, with 2 and 7 being the strongest choices. The colors are cheerful (a lot of people still look down at those who wear black to weddings, so I try to avoid it when I can haha). The train on 2 is GORGEOUS but the color on the last dress makes you so radiant. I would pair the last dress with some light colored heels and wear gold toned jewelry to complete a gorgeous fall look. Have fun at the wedding!

Oh, and congrats on handing in your PhD!

  7. Sam says:

I found the purple one the most striking! I’d pick that one as I prefer it’s silhouette, the pink is a bit flouncy for my tastes, but it does look lovely too!

  8. NeenaJ says:

Welcome back and congrats on your thesis!

I disagree that you can’t wear black to a wedding. Especially if it’s in the evening. Number 1 hardly screams “I’m in mourning.” It’s sophisticated while being fun and flirty. I also think it’s quite modern for a vintage dress. Love it. Pair it with a heel in an unexpected color (hot pink, highlighter yellow) for a bit of surprise. Hair twisted into a braid-ey, twist-ey chignon to show off the collar and the cut out. Makeup should feature natural, gleaming skin with a pale pink pout.

  9. Emi says:

I like #2 best, but any is fine except the all-white one – never wear an all white dress to a wedding!

  10. Massive massive massive congrats on submitting your phd. You must be feeling happy/excited/relieved/empty/lost/exhausted!!!

    In regards to the dresses:
Definitely not the white one – too close to the bride
The black ones are fine but I am a real colour lover. I know looking back at my wedding photos I love seeing all the brightly coloured dresses – they really stood out and looked spectacular in the photos.
The emerald and purple ones would be ok to wear to a winter wedding but I’d go for a more vibrant colour for a spring wedding.
For me it’s down to mauve-pink or Japanese inspired teal dress. What colour were the invitations? That is often a hint of the colour theme of the wedding. I thought mauve-pink looked a little bit bridesmaidy so if the invites were pink you might end up looking like one of the bridesmaids (I accidentally did that once – wore a hot pink dress I got made in Thailand to a wedding and the bridesmaids were also in hot pink). I was a guest of the groom and the bride came up to me and said ‘oh wow you could have been one of the bridesmaids’. I don’t think she was impressed though who’d expect the bridesmaids to be in hot pink! The wedding only lasted 6 weeks as it turns out that she cheated on the groom 2 weeks before the wedding : o).
My vote is for Japanese inspired teal dress. It’s really unique, beautiful and unlikely to be anything like the bridesmaids.

  11. Olivia says:

I think they are all beautiful! I like 5 the black and white because the waistline is different from the others. Elongates those sexy legs of yours. Also, it is an attention getting dress without drawing too much attention away from the bride. Not saying anything is wrong with getting lots of attention. 😉

  12. Chelsea says:

I like #1 and #4! They are all very pretty though 🙂 And that’s my totally un-fashionista opinion 🙂 Goodluck! x

  13. Jen W says:

I really love the first black bell dress, but it may be a little too much black for a wedding. My second fave is the white and black dress with fringing- the cut and details are GORGEOUS and very flattering on you.

    You babe, you 🙂

  14. I really love the first black one, athough the pink sounds lovely too. So glad to see your blog on my feed again!

  15. Kimberley says:

OMG… can you stop being so gorgeous and have clothes that look amazing on you?! Okay, I digress. I LOVE #1 the most – but for me its all about the mauve-pink. I think its so playful and lovely, and anyone and everyone with eyes will compliment you.

(Also SO glad I have you back to blogging!) 😀

  16. Looks like the pink is the strong contender here. I *LOVE* dress #1 (love!), but I agree with some of the others that you’d have a lot more occassions to wear that dress. The pink is made for weddings! 🙂 With glamorous Jessica Rabbit waves, smouldering eyes and nude lip. Is that taking it too far to the 60s territory? haha…

  17. Sabine says:

It would be easier to offer an opinion if you didn’t look equally amazing in all of these! My personal favourite is the black & white dress with fringing – it’s really flattering and makes you look endlessly long and slender. The pink dress looks beautiful too, you look so youthful and happy in it. Ah, dilemma!

  18. Kimberley says:

I loove the first one, but I’m not sure about the rules about wearing black to a wedding… I LOOVE the mauve/pink one and the purple one at the end!
Please make sure you share what you end up wearing!

  19. Dempeaux says:

Thankyou to everyone for your suggestions!! I didn’t get around to replying to everyone, but I read every comment! My sincere thankyou for taking the time to help me out! 🙂

  20. Jade says:

They all look amazing on you, I’m crazy for the Japanese inspired brocade dress, the colours look stunning with your complexion. Also how amazing is your hair, so long and healthy!

  21. Angela says:

That first dress. God, I’m in absolute love. You look amazing, as always.
